From 14th to 20th November, DWV will be supporting Road Safety Week, an annual campaign run by UK charity Brake.
The aim of the week is for UK organisations to raise awareness of road safety, helping to prevent road deaths and injuries, and support people affected by road crashes. Each year, thousands of schools, organisations and communities share important road safety messages, and help to raise funds so that Brake can provide care for more road victims and campaign for safe roads for everyone.
The theme of this year’s Road Safety Week is Safe Roads For All, and DWV will be joining communities and other professionals to promote rights for everyone to undertake safe and healthy journeys on roads.
Why is Road Safety Week so important?
Every 22 minutes, someone is killed or seriously injured on a UK road
Every day, six children are killed or seriously injured on UK roads
In 2021, 1,558 people were killed on roads in Britain, and more than 25,000 people suffered serious injuries
Road crashes are devastating events for families, friends and communities
Road Safety Week gives us all the opportunity to remember those killed or injured on UK roads, and raise funds to help Brake care for road victims and campaign for safe roads for all
Each of the days during Road Safety Week also focus on a specific keyword, which are as follows:
Monday: MOVE – By reducing your car use and walking/cycling to work, we can help reduce traffic. If you have limited paths for walking or cycling, contact your local authority and encourage them to make these paths available to the community.
Tuesday: TEACH – If you see unsafe driving behaviours, identify them and learn to resolve it. Together, we can help manage road risk and prevent further accidents and deaths from occurring.
Wednesday: WATCH – At higher speeds, a driver has less time to react to a hazard on the road. A vehicle can travel a long way in the few seconds it takes a driver to notice and react to any danger. By watching our speed and slowing down, it gives the driver more time to avoid a crash.
Thursday: THINK – Think about who you are sharing the road with. Pedestrians, cyclists, and riders are vulnerable on roads and account for half of all road traffic deaths worldwide.
Friday: FUTURE – Imagine a future where no one is killed or hurt on a road. Things could be improved with new technology, better road design and more road safety awareness.
Saturday: SAVE – Every 22 minutes, someone in the UK is killed or seriously injured in a road crash. On average, five people die on UK roads each day. Talk to people about how we can all manage our risk and help prevent crashes.
Sunday: SUPPORT – Show your support and light a candle for a loved one who has died in a road crash, or for all families affected by road crashes, on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR).
Chris Wood, Managing Director at DWV said: “DWV cares very deeply about road safety. Not only do we perform repairs on vehicles every single day, but our fleet of nationwide vehicles are constantly on the move. We endeavour for our mobile technicians to set an example on the roads, so that they drive with care and consideration for those around them, ensuring that UK roads are a safe place for drivers and pedestrians alike. I encourage everyone to take the messages away from Road Safety Week and remember them every time they are using the road.”
